Old photo folder caught me off guard this morning

I was clearing cloud storage during a slow work call and hit a folder from a 2017 family cookout. I remembered the day — humid, bug spray, my nephew face-deep in watermelon — but I’d forgotten what I looked like in the background. Not in a shame-spiral way. More like looking at a cousin I haven’t seen in years.

I’ve been at this since 2022, down 63 pounds, maintaining for about eight months. The scale has been almost boring lately, which is its own kind of win.

But that photo did something the scale can’t: it showed me how long I’d been carrying extra weight before I even had language for it. I didn’t delete it. I didn’t post it. I just left it in the folder.

There was a thread here a while back about keeping old pictures as data instead of ammunition, and I get it now. Anyone else have an old photo that lands differently than you expected?

Tbh that cousin feeling is so real. I hit the same thing with a 2016 airport gate selfie — I was mid-Philly layover, pretzel in one hand, neck pillow around like a donut.

I didn’t feel awful, just like, oh, that’s the guy who thought a Cinnabon was a meal. Now I’m the weirdo at hotel breakfast scanning for Greek yogurt and hard-boiled eggs, and my tracking app has a suspicious number of “terminal walk” entries.

Did you compare the 2017 pic to a recent travel photo, or leave it in the folder? I’m nosy but supportive.

The cousin comparison hits. I found a 2018 beach pic and didn’t recognize my posture — shoulders rolled forward, arms glued to my sides.

Now I take a monthly mirror shot in the same gym lighting and track waist at navel + neck. Scale barely moved for 8 weeks during my last recomp, but those pics and waist told the truth.

What got me was looking more like myself at maintenance than at my lowest. Did your 2017 folder make you notice anything besides size — how you stood, your expression, how you took up space?

old-photo you was just surviving humidity and bug spray. Wave, don’t grade.

I found a 2019 dorm move-in pic where I’m clutching a family-size bag of frozen peas like a trophy because I thought that was dinner. Now I keep a weird rotation: canned tuna, dining-hall cottage cheese singles, and eggs microwaved in a mug. Not glamorous, but it tracks.

What’s one cheap dorm protein you’d tell old-photo you to stock? I need ideas that survive a mini-fridge with no real freezer shelf.

Ha — we had a version of this thread last spring, the "old photos as neutral evidence" one. What got me wasn't my face, it was my hands.

In every 2016–2019 picture I'm holding something: a plate, a drink, a nephew, like built-in armor. Noticed last month that in this summer's pics my hands are just hanging there, or shoved in my pockets.

Nobody else would clock it, but I did.

Anything else in that frame land for you — where you were planted in the group, who you drifted toward? The

Tbh same. I saw 2018 me and just nodded like yep, she was doing her best in that humidity.

Week one here and now I'm scared to open my own camera roll, but this made it feel less

The nephew face-deep in watermelon got me — meanwhile café me was always "just tasting" something in the background 😅

The background thing is what gets me — nobody poses for the background, so it's weirdly unguarded evidence. After a similar hit I started taking one boring photo of myself in the same kitchen doorway, same spot, same light, first Sunday of the month.

No mirror flex, no outfit planning. I've got fourteen of them now and scrolling side by side tells me more than the scale, which has been basically flat since March while the photos are not.

Curious — did you leave that 2017 folder where it was, or move it somewhere you'll actually stumble on it again?

Night shift here, so most of my camera roll is 3am break-room shots under bad fluorescent light. What got me in old pics wasn’t the size—it was posture.

Shoulders up by my ears, hands jammed in pockets. Same as now. I started a boring monthly folder: same wall, same light, date in the caption. No posing, no hype.

Just a baseline so old cloud junk can’t blindside me. Did your 2017 shot show a habit you still catch yourself doing—standing, carrying stuff, whatever?
