My spring blood draw had two weird little notes

Honestly, i am not a numbers person, but I keep the paper report clipped to the fridge anyway. I have been on a GLP-1 since last August and I am down 31 pounds, so my 6-month check felt pretty routine.

My A1c came down from 5.9 to 5.4, which made my nurse practitioner smile. The odd part was my ferritin came back low. I figured all the protein and spinach I have been eating would keep that sort of thing fine.

Also my insurance changed the lab benefit in January, so I called the little pharmacy in town twice to make sure the draw was covered. The pharmacist there is a saint.

Now I am just paying more attention to iron-rich foods and waiting for the next draw. Did anyone else have one number improve while another went sideways?

I am trying not to spiral, mostly curious.

Ferritin was the number that lagged for me too once I hit maintenance. For me it lined up with eating way less red meat and drinking more coffee, so I started noting iron-rich meals in the same app I use for protein—lentils, spinach, a little beef—and tried to pair them with a vitamin C source.

It gave me something concrete to talk about at my next draw instead of just staring at the fridge paper. Did your panel include a full iron study, or just ferritin?

That distinction made my retest feel less mysterious.

Do you have the actual ferritin number and your lab’s reference range? Mine looked “low” at 18, but my old lab flagged under 15, so the cutoff matters.

I started tracking ferritin next to CRP, TIBC, and iron saturation in a notes app, because ferritin can be a weird standalone snapshot. Did they also check hemoglobin or run a full iron panel?

Not second-guessing your NP, just curious if the drop is isolated or part of a pattern. Also, any changes in periods, GI stuff, or workouts?

Those are the variables I’d want to see before blaming

It’s smart to keep the report where you’ll actually see it. Did that same draw include iron saturation or TIBC, or just ferritin?

I only ask because I started tracking ferritin next to those other iron markers and my cycle timing—ferritin alone was confusing for me. Also, with the weight loss, I’d jot down any body signals you’ve noticed (fatigue, restless legs, hair shedding, feeling cold) for a week or two before your next chat.

Not to diagnose anything—just gives your NP a fuller picture than one number.

That A1c drop is worth celebrating. For the ferritin note, I’d be curious whether hemoglobin or hematocrit also shifted on that report—sometimes one flagged number is easier to put in context beside the others.

I keep a very simple weekly average of protein servings and energy levels, plus a note about anything unusual like a heavier workout week, poor sleep, or feeling more tired than expected. That way, when a lab looks odd, I have a little history to bring to my clinician instead of just the single number.

Did the low ferritin feel like a total surprise, or had you noticed any fatigue or breathlessness in the weeks before?
