I’m 54, and both kids moved out last spring. The silence hit me harder than I expected, so I started walking just to get out of the house. First it was 15 minutes around the block.
Now I’m doing 2.8 miles five mornings a week, and I actually miss it if I skip. In the kitchen I went from frozen dinners at the counter to Sunday soup and roasted vegetables.
I’ve lost 57 pounds over the past year, and I’m down from a size 18 to a 12. The scale is nice, but the bigger win is that I feel like I’m cooking for a life I want to live, not just feeding an empty house.
For anyone a year or more in, what habit surprised you by sticking around?
