My travel routine lives in one pouch and a timer

I’m in a five-week stall around 186–188, and home food isn’t the problem. It’s the two- or three-day work trips where every meal is someone else’s choice.

My system is small: one pouch with protein bars, almonds, and a resistance band; a refillable bottle; and a phone timer for a 15-minute walk after the last session.

I also pick a room with a fridge when I can, so Greek yogurt and cut fruit are there instead of me raiding the lobby basket at 10 p.m. Walking is the weak spot.

At home I get 8k steps before lunch; on the road I’m lucky to hit 3k. Last trip I managed the walk loop twice out of four days, which isn’t impressive but beat zero.

How do you keep your baseline from dissolving when the schedule isn’t yours?

Mechanism nerd take: a 2–3 day trip can’t add much actual fat, but restaurant sodium/carbs/alcohol can mask loss for a week. I log morning weights and look at the 7-day average, not the trip-day number.

The one thing that helped me when meals are chosen for me: I don’t fight the entree, I front-load protein earlier (jerky or a shake at the airport) and at dinner eat protein/veg first, then decide if I even want the starch. Also ask for sauces/dressings on the side—it’s low-friction and usually gets a yes.

Sharp Q: are you comparing same-cycle weigh-ins, or could you be retaining water from travel meals? In the trials, weight loss isn’t linear anyway.

The pouch + timer thing is genius—my airport walk is mostly me speed-walking past Cinnabon 😅

stealing the pouch idea; my dorm protein is peanut butter and regret 😅

the pouch is great, but honestly those trips usually drop my weight — hotel coffee and skipped desserts do the work lol.

I’ve had my travel pouch packed since that spring thread—the timer is the part I always forget 😅

I added a 3-oz tuna packet, disposable fork, and collapsible bowl to my pouch. Hotel breakfast: two hard-boiled eggs plus a plain oatmeal packet made with hot water—about 300 cal and 20g protein, even when the buffet is all pastries.

Sharp question: how do you log independent restaurant meals without weighing? I use chain nutrition PDFs and USDA FoodData Central for basics, but local places are a black box.

I usually estimate, then add 25% as a reality tax.

Actually I think 186–188 over five weeks is more like a 2-lb maintenance band than a true stall, especially with 2–3 day trips mixed in—trend-line-wise that’s pretty calm. What helped me on group-meal trips was checking the menu in the hotel lobby and picking one anchor (protein + a veg) before I walked in, then letting the rest be whatever.

I also tag “travel week” in my tracker so I can see whether the flat spot really lines up with restaurant food and recovery days. Does your five-week window match the trip weeks, or the days after?
