My weekday meals are four repeats and a wildcard

I started keeping a food note next to my grocery receipts, mostly because I wanted to know what a normal Tuesday actually costs. Lately it’s: 8am, plain Greek yogurt with frozen berries; 12:30, chicken thigh, rice, roasted zucchini; 4pm, cottage cheese and a few almonds; 7pm, two eggs with a corn tortilla and salsa.

Around 105g protein, 1,750 calories, $7.10 in groceries.

The wildcard is whatever fruit is cheapest. Before this med, I’d skip lunch and then eat standing up at 9pm. Now the 4pm snack is non-negotiable or I get weirdly flat by dinner.

Not exciting, but it repeats without me having to negotiate with myself. I’m curious whether other people have a default plate they can rotate for weeks, or if you need more variety to stay sane.

Your four-repeat setup is basically my maintenance blueprint. The wildcard is the part I’d protect—mine is usually a big salad with whatever protein is leftover, or eggs for dinner if I can’t face cooking.

One thing that helped me: I stopped judging a day by the number and started looking at the 7-day average, because my Tuesday is almost always boring and my Saturday never is. They cancel out. What’s your wildcard usually? And do you log the grocery note by week or just per receipt?

I’m nosy because I’m trying to get our food spend down without making every meal feel like a spreadsheet.

My wildcard would 100% be chips, so I respect the discipline.

your 4pm is basically my witching hour with two kids. I do cottage cheese in the little 4-oz cups, stir in dill/onion powder, and eat it with cucumber rounds while I’m making their snack.

Almonds live in a tiny ramekin, otherwise I’d eat the whole bag standing up. Real question: is your wildcard planned ahead or whatever survives the snack drawer?

Mine is a rotisserie chicken quesadilla on a low-carb tortilla when nobody ate their dinner. Also, do you batch the rice or use microwave pouches?

That’s the piece that breaks my repeat meals.

I run the same four-repeat pattern but track cost per gram of protein in the same sheet. My repeats land around $0.031/g; wildcard nights average $0.067 and add roughly 190 calories.

My 12-week trendline shows those weeks go flat instead of down, even when the weekly average looks fine. The sneaky part was that my wildcard wasn't planned — it was just whatever was in the fridge, so the variance was the real problem, not the food itself.

Do you schedule yours, or is it spontaneous? And do you log per receipt or per day?

Per-receipt made me undercount anything that never generated one.
