New here, overthinking my hair

Hi everyone, I'm very new, just a few days in, and I'm trying not to panic about every tiny thing. I have fine, shoulder-length hair, and I normally lose a small handful in the shower. Lately every stray strand gets a full inspection.

It's probably too early to notice anything, but hair loss is one of the side effects I keep seeing mentioned, so I wanted to ask real people instead of spiraling through search results. For those who have been on this longer: did your hair change at all, and if so, when did you first notice?

I'm not looking for medical advice, just your experiences. Thanks for being kind to a newbie.

I’m the spreadsheet type too, and the shower is honestly the worst place to judge this. My hair is fine/collarbone-length, and I only count shed hairs on wash days, then divide by days since last wash. Dry-brush days: 5–12.

Wash days: 40–70, which sounds scary but is mostly accumulated. My trendline didn’t move until around week 10, and even then it stayed

Three years in—hair panic threads pop up every few months. First week is just overthinking season.

Totally get this. I’m two kids deep and my shower is chaos, so I had to make hair tracking boring on purpose. I keep a hair catcher in the drain and snap one pic every Sunday before washing—same lighting, same spot.

That stopped me inspecting every strand like evidence. I also only detangle with a wide-tooth comb and conditioner now; rushing through dry hair was definitely breaking more off. Early on, stress/sleep/seasonal shed can muddy the picture too.

Are you comparing to your normal pre-start shed, or just noticing it more because you’re watching? I also keep jerky/protein suff in the snack drawer so I’m not running on coffee and kid crusts.

I take same-day photos every 4 weeks: same lighting, same part, hair air-dried. Daily strand spotting is useless because fine shoulder-length hair just shows every shed more than blunt cuts do.

When I was deep in a cut and lifting 4x, my sheds went up briefly and my ponytail was the culprit—tight ties and rough brushing caused way more breakage than actual root loss. Now I use a loose claw clip and sleep on satin.

Sharp question: are you seeing little tapered bulbs on the shed hairs, or just short broken pieces? That’s what helped me stop spiraling.

lol same, i named my shower drain during week one. try not to spiral yet

Two kids here, so my version of tracking is low-effort: cheap drain catcher in the shower, empty it every Sunday, not daily. Daily inspection made me crazy.

I also keep a wide-tooth comb in the caddy instead of tugging a brush through wet hair, and I wear it up for school run/snack-drawer chaos. Might be placebo, but less tugging = less drama in my drain.

Are you seeing more on wash days only, or also on your pillow/brush? That distinction helped me stop spiraling. First week is rough.

Also hide the magnifying mirror, seriously.

Fellow overthinker here, but I try to keep hair in the same bucket as recomp: boring inputs, not daily inspections. One concrete thing that helped me stop spiraling: gently comb with a wide-tooth comb before washing, and keep hair loose instead of tight ponytails/braids.

Loose shed accumulates, so wash day always looks scarier than it is. I lift 4x and watch protein/sleep first because a steep deficit and trash sleep make everything feel worse.

Sharp question: what’s your weekly average rate of loss and protein target? I’d watch those trends way more than week-one shower strands.

Hi, I’m only a few days in too, so I’m right there with you on the strand-by-strand inspection. One tiny thing I’ve started: loose claw clips and satin scrunchies instead of tight ponytails, and I only use a wide-tooth comb in the shower with conditioner.

No idea if it changes anything long-term, but it makes me feel a little less helpless. Have you noticed whether you shed more on wash days or brush days?

I honestly can’t tell yet—I think I’m just noticing every hair because I’m looking for it. Trying to remind myself that some shed is normal.

Fellow over-inspector here. What finally helped me was a once-a-week “hair check” instead of daily strand audits: I gather a small section at the nape, feel density, and count how many wraps my usual scrunchie takes. If it suddenly needs fewer wraps, that’s my cue to look closer. Daily counting just

I totally did the shower strand count too. A weekly photo helped me chill—how’s your scalp feeling so far?

The shower inspection is so real—I started putting my hair up before washing so I stop counting every strand 😅
