At week 12 my A1c fell from 5.6 to 5.2, which felt like the headline, but my LDL rose 18 points and my HDL stayed flat. I was 39, 180 cm, started at 86 kg and maybe 25% body fat by my scale.
The first six weeks were textbook: calories down, 4 lifts, 8k steps, weight falling. Then I added two more hard conditioning sessions because I thought I needed to “earn” the fat loss.
My waist kept dropping, but my resting HR climbed, sleep got choppy, and my fasting glucose bounced around more than it had at the start. Labs at week 12 showed the A1c win but also the LDL bump.
My doctor basically said the trend matters more than one snapshot, and we talked about fiber, fish, and not panicking over a single draw.
The unexpected part was that my best body-comp week came when I removed the extra conditioning and ate more protein at breakfast. I’m not saying labs are useless—they caught the sleep/stress load before the scale did.
I’m saying if you’re chasing composition, don’t treat a good A1c as proof everything else is fine, and don’t treat one ugly LDL as a failure. I now pull a basic panel every 12 weeks and track waist, lifts, and sleep alongside it. What labs are you tracking?
