I am only in week one and already forgetting what I logged and cannot keep track of it all

Hi everyone, I’m brand new here and just finished my first week. I’m trying not to overcomplicate things, but I keep losing track of the small stuff: how much water I drank, whether I noted a headache, and if I actually ate enough protein.

I started a plain note on my phone with three lines: water, protein, how I felt. It’s already messy. I’m 5’4”, started at size 18, and my main goal this month is just to be consistent. Do you all track anything simple, or do you just go by feel? I’m nervous about askng dumb questions, so thanks for being kind.

Early on I made it way too complicated too. What helped was a cheap small whiteboard on the fridge with five tick boxes: protein, water, mood, movement, sleep. I filled it while coffee brewed, wiped it every Sunday. No app, no phone note.

If you’re already forgetting, pick one “non-negotiable” for this week—mine was protein at breakfast—and let the rest be vague. You can add more later. Quick question: are you tracking to spot a pattern, or just to feel less scattered? That changes how much detail is actually worth it.

yo i’m the same way, especially when i’m up till 3 gaming. what fixed it for me was ditching the one big note and doing a quick voice memo whenever i get up for a drink or bathroom break.

like “water 2, protein shake, slight headache” then i paste them into one note before bed. also i put a 2L bottle on my desk and just refill it once; way easier than counting glasses.

for protein i keep jrky or tuna pouches by the keyboard, otherwise i look up at midnight and realize i’ve had like 20g lol. are you logging as it happens or trying to remember at night? that was my whole problem.

I work nights too. Day-based trackers are useless for us. Try anchoring it to shift times instead: start of shift, middle, before bed. Three phone alarms. When one goes off, type one line in the same note.

Water: count bottle refills, not ounces. Protein: decide it at start of shift, not after. Feelings: only log if something’s off. If nothing’s there, it was fine.

Takes 10 seconds. Better than a messy note you avoid. You on fixed nights or rotating?

Honestly, totally normal. Week one is just calibration, not a test. I’m a daily weigher, but I keep tracking stupid-simple: one hair tie around my water bottle; every time I finish it, I slide the tie down.

For protein, I only log “anchor” foods—Greek yogurt, eggs, chicken—not every gram. For headaches or mood, I text myself one word with a timestamp.

If the note gets messy, that’s data too. Sharp question: what’s the one thing you actually care about seeing at the end of week two—water, protein, or symptom pattern?

Pick that one and let the other two be rough. Trend lines > perfect logs.

For what it's worth, i have two kids too, so my tracking is stupid-simple. One big water bottle on the counter—I slide a rubber band down it each refill, no ounces.

Protein: snack drawer with cheese sticks, turkey sticks, roasted chickpeas; I keep a sticky note on the drawer and add a dot per protein snack. How I felt: at bedtime I text myself one word—headache, fine, wiped—then search that word later.

Are you trying to log in the moment, or could you do a 30-second recap afer they’re down? That’s the only way it sticks for me.

I lift 4x and run a recomp, so I only track what changes a decision. My whole log is a pinned Notes checklist: Protein 1/2/3, Water 1/2, Sleep 7h?, and one “felt off” line. I check boxes instead of logging amounts.

Protein: I pre-log three anchor meals the night before; if I hit two, I call it good. Headache/whatever: timestamp one line and move on. Week one doesn’t need pretty data, just enough to spot if protein or sleep is slipping.

Sharp question: do you have a protein floor per meal yet? If not, that’s the first thing I’d anchor.

Hi, I’m only a few days ahead of you and my note was a disaster too. What helped was ditching the three-line note and just texting myself.

I pinned my own number and send one message whenever I remember: “water: 1 bottle, protein: eggs + yogurt, felt: tired/headache.” It’s ugly but chronological, so I don’t have to reorganize anything. For protein I only count “anchors” like eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, or a shake instead of grams, because grams made me freeze.

Do you find it easier to log in the moment, or batch it at the end of the day?

Try making the log binary instead of descriptive. Mine is a 3-item checklist: protein anchor (two palm-sized servings?), water (refilled my 32oz bottle twice?), symptom (one word max). Tap, don’t type.

At night I only review if something’s off. The messy note is because you’re trying to record the movie, not the score.

Sharp question: what decision does each line actually change tomorrow? If none, delete it.

Sorry to hijack — are you using Notes or a dedicated app? Loop back: treat the log like a database, not a diary. One searchable line per day, dictated at a fixed time: “8p: 2.5L water, 110g protein, headache no. #log.” Search #headache later. Miss a day, leave blank — gaps are data too. Fewer fields, less mess.
