dorm-food math has me down 80, but my weight graph is napping

I started around 260 last winter and today the scale says 180-ish, which still feels fake when I type it. But for the last three weeks it has been giving me the same number like it’s clocked out.

My dorm meals are basically a rotation of microwave rice, canned chicken, frozen edamame, tuna packets, and a yogurt cup I pretend is dessert.

Cheap protein has carried me, but I think my portions have slowly gotten roomier and my late-night study snacking has crept back in. Not huge stuff, just a handful of crackers here, an extra string cheese there. I’m not panicking, more like annoyed at the plot twist after the fun part.

I’m going to measure my rice for a week and add a real vegetable that isn’t just salsa. Has anyone else had a long flat stretch after a big drop, and what tiny change helped you notice your own drift?

First, 80 down is bananas—your graph earned a nap. Dorm-food plateau thought: are you weighing on carpet?

My old dorm scale was basically a random number generator until I moved it to hard tile, same spot, before coffee. Also canned chicken/tuna/edamame/yogurt can swing sodium and water hard.

I’d compare your 7-day average now to three weeks ago, plus a waist tape once a week. If the average is flat but clothes feel looser, that’s still noise, not failure.

What’s your weekly average actually doing?

80 down is not fake — that’s a whole person’s worth of noise. Scale naps like that are super normal, especially with a really consistent dorm menu.

One concrete thing that helped me: I started tracking a 7-day rolling average in my notes app instead of reacting to the daily number. Mine sat at 171.8 for 18 days, then the average started creeping down before the scale admitted anything.

Also, canned chicken/tuna/rice can be sneaky salty, so water shifts can hide fat loss. Do you have a tape measure or a pair of jeans that could be your tiebreaker?

That’s what kept me sane when my graph napped.

Three weeks of the same number after 80 down is such a mind game—huge congrats on the 80 though. One dumb thing that helped me: I weighed my rice/yogurt for a week instead of using the dorm “cup,” and my normal scoop was like 1.5 servings.

Also swapped half the canned chicken for frozen edamame plus salsa/hot sauce so every meal wasn’t the exact same sodium-and-carb vibe. Not magic, but the scale finally blinked.

Are you rotating brands/flavors at all, or is it the exact same lineup daily?

Sorry to hijack — has anyone seen the 5 oz tuna packets under $1.20 and actually in stock lately, and what’s shipping running? Anyway, back to your plateau: I had a similar flat stretch when my dorm rotation was rice + canned chicken + edamame.

The scale stayed put, but my waist tape and progress photos kept moving. What helped me was comparing 10-day averages instead of daily numbers, and scanning sodium on the canned stuff — my “plateau” was partly water from a high-salt week

I track daily and use a 7-day rolling average, because the daily number lies. At -78 lb I had 16 straight days at 172.4, then a 2.6 lb whoosh after a normal-ish weekend.

Three weeks is annoying, but are your weekly averages truly flat, or just the same daily number? Also worth taping waist/hips. My scale flatlined while waist dropped 1.

Tbh three weeks stuck after 80 down is usually water noise for me. When I lived on canned chicken/tuna, my rings got tight and the scale froze while my jeans kept getting looser.

I started a Sunday waist photo and weighed my rice/yogurt for a few days just to see actual portions, not to change anything. My snack drawer saves me during kid chaos: edamame cups, string cheese, tuna packets.

Are you eating the same high-sodium rotation daily, or has your dorm menu shifted lately?
