Protein powder keeps welding itself to the tub bottom

I split a 5-lb bag of unflavored protein into two quart jars three weeks ago. The small jar is fine; the big one has developed a crust that bends my scoop.

I’m on a GLP-1, so shakes are a reliable lunch when solid food sounds like a lot, and I hate tossing the last third of a bag. I’ve tried a dry fork, a butter knife, and leaving the lid off for an hour—none of it convincing.

Before I buy more jars or humidity packs, I want to know what has actually held up for you over a month, not just a clever hack. Is this a moisture problem, a static problem, or am I just storing it wrong?

And does decanting really help, or is a smaller package the only honest fix?

Been there — my travel jar once formed a protein puck I could’ve used as a hockey puck. What saved me: decanting the big jar into two smaller ones so there’s less headspace/air exchange every scoop, plus a

Been there. For me it was headspace + kitchen humidity, not the powder.

I split a 5-lb unflavored into two 1.5-qt Mason jars: the one filled to ~80% stayed scoopable 5 weeks; the other at ~50% turned into drywall in 11 days.

Now I drop two 1-g food-grade silica packets in the big jar, taped to the underside of the lid so they don’t get buried, and stir with a chopstick 2x/week. A cheap hygrometer showed

I had a similar big jar. Now I keep the 5-lb bag itself zipped in the freezer and refill a small pint jar every few days.

The big jar was the issue because it sat half-empty and got opened constantly. For the crust, I chip it out and blitz it back to powder in a dry blender—no waste.

Are you scooping straight from the big jar or refilling a smaller one?

My fix was to stop treating the big jar as the daily jar. I keep a 2-cup “working jar” and refill it from the big one every Sunday, then wipe the lid gasket dry before closing.

The crust stopped because the big jar wasn’t getting opened twice a day anymore. I also weigh the working jar empty and full so I can see if I’m actually using what I scoop versus losing it to scraping.

How often are you opening the big jar versus the small one?

New angle: where are you scooping? My big jar only crusted after I started scooping near the steaming kettle—tiny steam puffs got in, then the lid sealed it.

Now I scoop onto a dry plate away from heat, use one dedicated dry scoop that never touches the blender, and tape the fill date on the jar. If it hits four weeks, I plan a use-it-up week (shakes + savory oats) so the bottom doesn’t turn to concrete.

Does your crust look glassy or chalky? Might help you figure out moisture vs. compaction.
