The quiet months didn’t announce themselves to me either

Every few months a version of this thread rolls through, and I get why. I’ve been here about three years now, and I still remember waiting for some obvious switch to flip. For me it never did. Around month four I could still eat a normal dinner, so I figured I was one of the people it just didn’t hit.

What actually changed was almost too boring to notice: I stopped finishing my coffee, then started leaving the last third of a sandwich. Our weekly grocery total drifted from about $140 to $95 without me trying.

My partner noticed before I did, because I wasn’t making a second pot in the afternoon. No choir, no lightning bolt.

Just a slow subtraction of old habits. For the long-timers, what’s the least dramatic sign you eventually learned to trust?

I only caught it retrospectively. I was logging pre-meal hunger 1–10 and whether I wanted seconds.

Day to day, nothing looked different. Then I graphed the month: hunger ratings drifted from mostly 6s to mostly 4s, and seconds went from 4x/week to maybe 1x. No switch, just a trendline.

The scale was flat-ish that stretch, so vibes alone would’ve missed it. What was your first non-scale metric that actually moved—waist, step count, late-night snack urge, something else?

One thing I wish I’d tracked earlier: how long snacks/packages lasted. Around month 5 I noticed the same bag of almonds was still around on Friday when it used to be gone by Tuesday.

That was the first objective clue. Also started noticing I’d box half my restaurant meal without deciding to.

Question for the thread: did your first evidence show up in your kitchen/pantry rather than in how you felt? And did anyone use grocery spend as a proxy?

I’m curious because self-report is so noisy.

I track grocery spend and takeout like a hawk, so that ended up being my boring metric. My spreadsheet has weekly grocery total, number of DoorDash orders, and how many leftovers got tossed. Weeks 1–4? Flat.

Month 3 I was still ordering out 5x/week and tossing half the produce. Around month 5 it quietly slipped to 2 takeout orders and grocery bill down ~$35/week without me white-knuckling it.

That was the first sign anything changed, way before I “felt” different. Curious if anyone else saw it in their budget before their appetite?
