My progress photo roll is a boring but useful log

I’m 31, lift four days a week, and treat protein and sleep like part of the program. Every first Sunday I take the same three photos: front, side, back, same bathroom light, same spot.

No posing, no pump, no filter. The scale has moved 14 pounds since January, but the pics mostly show less lower-back bloat, better posture, and my shoulders sitting a little wider.

My squat and bench haven’t dropped, which matters more to me than a fast drop. I’m not chasing shortcuts, so the slow recomp look is fine.

The weird part: the photo I almost deleted at month three is now the one that proves something changed. I keep the album hidden because staring at it daily makes me nitpick.

Anyone else get more signal from a dull photo set than from the scale?

I do something similar but anchor each photo set to a tape measure day: navel, widest hip, relaxed upper arm, and shoulder circumference. My 16-week trendline says scale -12.4 lb, navel -2.1 cm, but shoulder:waist ratio in the front pic improved way more than either, which tracks with what you're seeing.

One thing that made my roll less boring: I keep a text column next to each photo with sleep avg, lifting volume, and sodium the day before. The bloat look correlates with sodium way harder than with weight.

Have you tried measuring shoulder:waist from the pics? That's the number I'd bet is actually moving.

I really like the fixed setup; it removes so much guesswork. One thing that helped me was adding a one-line note to each photo set — weekly weigt average, how training felt, and sleep quality — so I can compare the pictures with context instead of reacting to a single Sunday.

I also keep the same pair of shorts and tripod height for consistency. Do you review the sets monthly, or only every few months when you want a clearer before-and-after?

Either way, the posture and shoulder changes you’re describing sound like a genuinely useful trend.

Love this. I run a cafe, so the pastry case is my daily boss fight.

I added a fifth monthly photo: me in the same work apron before opening. That apron string is brutally honest—when it ties easier, I know it’s not just bloat.

I also snap a quick pic of my plate before staff meal, because portion creep shows up there before the scale does. Do you keep your photo roll in a hidden album or somewhere you actually see it?
