12-week plateau: down 22 lbs but waist hasn't budged

I'm 5 ft 7, started at 214 lbs 14 weeks ago.

Down to 192 as of this morning, which is great, but my waist is stuck at 38.5 inches for five weeks. I lift 3x/week, walk 8k steps, eat ~1800 cal, protein ~130g.

Fasting glucose went from 103 to 94, A1c 5.8 to 5.6. Clothes fit looser, so maybe recomp?

Has anyone seen scale drop without tape change, then whoosh later? What data would you track next—tape, photos, or DEXA?

Scale and tape disagree all the time. I lost 30 lbs before my waist moved an inch. Water and glycogen can hide fat loss for weeks.

DEXA is overkill unless it's free or you're data-obsessed. Monthly photos and one pair of jeans told me more.

The fasting glucose drop from 103 to 94 is the win here. That's not a small change.

Scale and tape disagree, yeah. My waist stalled six weeks, then dropped 2 inches after a diet break.

Could be bloating though. How much fiber are you eating? I upped veggies and my waist went up before it went down.

Are you measuring at the same time? Morning before food vs evening can be 1.5 inches different for me.

Measure at navel, same time, once a week. Quick.

If you're new to lifting, muscle repair water can mask inches. Trust photos and how clothes fit.

I wouldn't jump to a diet break yet. At 1800 calories and 130g protein you're still in a reasonable spot. My waist stalled at 36 for almost two months while weight went 205 to 190.

What finally moved it for me was steps from 8k to 11k and measuring at the exact same spot, first thing after bathroom. I also weighed food for a week because my 1800 was really 2100 on weekends. Check sodium and digestion too. Not medical advice, just my n=1. The scale didn't move much that month either.

Wait, 8k steps plus 3 lifts is already solid. What's your weekly weight trend? Five weeks at 192 is a plataeu, not recomp.

Take monthly photos in same light and underwear. My eyes caught changes when tape didn't.

My waist held 37 for six weeks then dropped 1.5 inches in ten days. Bodies are weird.

I'm 5'6 and my waist sat at 36 for seven weeks while I lost 10 lbs; what moved first was my hip measurement, down 1.5 inches, then waist finally caught up. I'd add weekly averages, navel and narrowest point, plus a monthly photo in the same light.

Single tape days fooled me constantly with salt, alcohol, and hard lifting.

I'm 5'8 and had a similar stall. My waist didn't move for six weeks because Friday through Sunday I was adding 800-1200 calories a day in wine and takeout, even with perfect weekdays. Once I tracked weekends, the tape moved 1.25 inches in three weeks. Audit Saturday and Sunday before cutting weekday food.

My tape lagged the scale by eight weeks. Then a deload week and actual rest dropped 0.75 inch overnight.

My tape number was garbage for weeks because I measured at night over my belly button after dinner. Switched to first thing, fasted, at the narrowest point, normal exhale, and got 35.75 within ten days. Same tape, same mirror. What spot/time are you using?

Clothes looser is the win. Tape measures lie more than scales do.

Try measuring hips and upper arm too. Waist is the last drama queen.

My waist sat at 38 for a month even at 1800, because my weekends were 2600-3000. I kept weekdays the same, capped Friday/Saturday dinners, added a 20-minute after-dinner walk, and tape went 38 to 36.75 in three weeks while scale only moved 2 lb. What do your weekends look like?
