Fourteen weeks in and my walking shoes are getting loose

Turned 54 this spring, and the house got quiet when our youngest moved out last fall. I coped by snacking at 9pm in front of the TV.

Fourteen weeks ago I decided to restart instead. Started at 145, stepped on the scale this morning at 113.

The number is nice but the weird stuff is what I notice — I actually look forward to my 7am walk now, three miles around the neighborhood with a podcast.

And I've learned to cook again, real meals, not the frozen stuff I was heating up for two. Down two jean sizes, from a 12 to an 8. My frustration? None, except that my favorite old hoodie now looks like a tent. Anyone else find that the habit changes snuck up on them more than the scale did?

the loose shoes thing is wild. i'm a late night gamer and my old ritual was a diet soda + something crunchy at 1am.

swapped to a giant tumbler of ice water with zero-cal flavor drops and frozen grapes. my feet shrank befoe my gut did lol, had to go down half a size in slip-ons.

question: are you just lacing tighter or did you actually replace the shoes? also do you walk fasted or eat first? i'm useless before coffee but a banana fixes that. keep going man.

I had the same 9pm TV window once our second moved out. What finally broke it was making dinner cleanup the cutoff — kitchen lights off, nothing after. I keep cut fruit in the fridge door and seltzer where the chips used to live. Took about three weeks before the craving stopped feeling like a hole in the evening.

Curious — are you walking before breakfast? My 7am habit only stuck once I stopped sitting down with coffee first. And my sleep got noticeably deeper around week ten, which I did not expect at all. Did the walks change your evenings, or did you have to change the evenings first?

Loose shoes are such a weird win—nobody warns you your feet shrink too. The 9pm TV hour is my danger zone as well. With two kids, “kitchen closed” is a joke most nights, so I pre-pack my snack drawer after dinner: beef stick, mini cukes, one square dark chocolate, seltzer.

If I want chips, I have to eat them standing at the counter—no bowl, no couch. Question: what are you doing with that 9pm slot now? Replacing it with tea/a show/word game, or just riding the urge? That’s the piece I keep tweaking.

That quiet-house 9pm ritual is the part I’d be curious about. For me it wasn’t really hunger — it was the hand-to-mouth habit while the TV did the entertaining.

I started tracking my evening energy on a 1–5 note, and the nights I took a short walk after dinner or made a mug of peppermint tea scored way higher than the nights I white-knuckled it. Did your 7am walk replace that slot, or did it just make the 9pm urge quieter over time?

Also, do you notice it’s worse on days you’re home alone all evening?

Congrats on 14 weeks — looking forward to the 7am walk is the real win. One thing that helped me keep morning walks from feeling like a chore: I save one addictive podcast/audiobook only for walks, and on low-motivation days I use a “one block minimum” rule.

What’s your rain/too-hot backup plan? Also, are you tracking anything besides the scale — like mornings you get out, or how you feel by 3pm?

That afternoon energy dip was my tell that the walks were doing more than the number.

Loose shoes got me—I had to add a hole to my belt before I noticed my feet. Café owner here, and my danger hour is 2:30, the dead shift between lunch and pickup.

I started making a sparkling water in a stemmed glass and wiping down the pastry case instead of "evening out" the broken cookies. Having a task with a clear end keeps my hands busy.

Did you replace the 9pm habit with anything, or just push through that first stretch? That’s the part I’m still figuring out.

fourteen weeks is a real reset. The odd shift for me was taste — my 9pm snack urge got replaced by wanting something cold and salty after a walk, like cucumber spears with lime and chili.

I’ve also started cooking in smaller pans; a giant casserole used to feel normal, now it feels like leftovers for a week. Do you have a favorite 7am loop yet, or are you still testing routes?

That’s the habit that stuck for me when the house got quiet.

I’m in the lost-then-regained club too, so I know that mix of pride and side-eye at the scale. Curious about your 7am walk: same route every day, or do you switch it up?

I started tracking mine by landmarks instead of minutes—coffee shop, library, that one barking dog—and it made 3 miles feel less like a workout and more like a commute I actually chose. I also save a specific audiobook for walks only, which gets me out the door on mornings I’d rather hit snooze.

What’s your go-to stretch when motivation dips—do you shorten the walk, change the time, or just lace up and go?
