Two kids, 4 and 7, and the 4–7 p.m. stretch is survival mode. For weeks I'd stand at the snack drawer while making dinner and eat whatever was left: a handful of goldfish, half a granola bar, three fruit snacks. Not hungry, just feral.
What finally helped was giving myself a decoy: before school pickup I make a small plate — cheese stick, apple slices, 8 almonds — and put it on the counter. If I want something after that, I have to sit down and eat a real snack.
The kids' drawer stays theirs, no guilt negotiations. It's been 3 weeks and I'm not elbow-deep in crackers at 5 p.m. Not perfect, but less chaos.
Anyone else have a snack-drawer rule that actually sticks with kids in the house?
