Recomp scale vs gym log

I weigh every morning after the bathroom and before coffee, same scale, same spot. I lift four days a week, upper/lower, protein around 165g, sleep usually 7.5 hours. Last three weeks my scale has been boring: 184.2, 184.8, 184.4.

But my top set on incline press went from 70s to 80s for 6 reps, and my waist tape at the navel is down about half an inch. I’m not chasing a shortcut or a whoosh; I’m just trying to read the recomp correctly.

Still, a flat morning number can set my mood before I even get to the gym. For folks who weigh every day and train: what do you track besides the scale so a quiet week doesn’t mess with your head?

Nice. The waist tape + top-set jump is a better recomp signal than the scale.

One thing I’d log: same waist conditions—first thing, after bathroom, before food/water, at end of a normal exhale, not sucked in. I track a 7-day scale average and a 7-day waist average, because daily weight is mostly water/glycogen noise.

Sharp question: were both 80s-for-6 sets at the same RIR/failure level and same rest? If yes, that’s a real strength gain. Also, did you change anything carb-wise around lifting? That can spike scale water and mask fat loss for a week or two.

I’m in maintenance after losing ~60, and recomp made my scale a liar too. What helped was switching to a 10-day rolling average and measuring navel, upper arm, and thigh once a month.

The daily number became one data point, not the score. Also, if your incline press jumped from 70s to 80s for 6 while your waist is down, that’s a great trade.

Are you logging RPE or bar speed on those top sets? When strength climbs but scale stays flat, sleep and stress usually show up there before weight does.

Do you log RPE or reps in reserve on the incline? For me, the same weight feeling easier is a quiet win the scale ignores.

I also take side-lit photos every two weeks in the same shorts—they caught upper-back/shoulder changes a month before measurements did. One caution: check bench angle/seat height if anything changed.

My 10lb jumps sometimes turned out to be setup/leverage, which saved me a fake celebration. If your setup’s identical, congrats.

How many reps do you leave in the tank on that 80s set?
