I replaced willpower with a kitchen closing time

I’m down 23 lbs since February, but the interesting part is the logistics. Hunger cues used to be my primary sensor.

Now they’re noisy and delayed, so I run the day off constraints instead: roughly 25g protein per meal, vegetables before anything from a box, no decisions after 8pm. Sunday I prep three interchangeable bases and two sauces. Boring? Yes. Repeatable? Also yes.

The odd win is that I stopped negotiating with myself at 9pm.

The kitchen closes when the dishwasher starts, not when I feel 'done.' The leading indicators are bedtime, water, and whether I packed lunch. Anyone else find the system matters more than motivation once hunger stops being the loudest input?

Night shift here. 8pm is my 2am. My close is 5am, alarm named "shut it down." I pre-portion Greek yogurt + berries for the drive-home window, because that's when the boxed stuff calls.

The rule that helped: if it's not already in a container, kitchen is closed. What are your three bases? I keep rotating rice, roasted veg, shredded chicken and I'm bored.

Honestly, hi, brand new here (day 4), so sorry if this is a silly question. I love the kitchen closing time idea. I’ve been trying to copy it with a giant mug of decaf tea and brushing my teeth right after dinner as my “closed” signal, but I’m not sure it counts. Is your 8pm

I like this, but my close time is 4:30, not 8. If I wait until the kids are down, I’m a raccoon in the pantry.

So while I’m making their dinner, I make myself a protein+crunch plate—cottage cheese, cucumber, roasted edamame—and eat it standing. Then I’m not grazing off their plates.

Snack drawer is the other fix: only things with a built-in stop, like string cheese, mini peppers, or pre-portioned nuts. Not willpower, just fewer decisions.

Does yor 8pm close survive weekends/kid chaos, or do you move it earlier?

Maintaining for about a year now, and my close is a physical switch, not a time. At 7:30 I turn off the overhead kitchen light and clip a little “CLOSED” magnet on the fridge.

If I really want something, I have to turn the light back on and write it on the dry-erase board first. That tiny friction kills most autopilot snacking.

My after-close tally is mostly “tired” and “thirsty,” not hunger. Does anyone else’s close shift on weekends, or do you keep the same shut-off seven days a week?

I still do a planned “closing snack” at 7:45—same thing every night: Greek yogurt with frozen berries. It’s not a decision, it’s already on the fridge door.

If the kids are feral, I eat it standing up while they brush teeth. Then kitchen is done. The snack drawer is only for their lunchbox stuff, not me.

Do you keep any planned bite before close, or is it cold turkey?
