Stalled at 18 lbs down for 19 days—normal?

I’m 38M, 5’10”, started at 214.8 on Jan 6, now 196.9.

First 12 weeks lost pretty steadily on 1,850-1,950 cal/day, lifting 3x, 8-10k steps. Last 19 days scale has bounced 196.4-198.1 with no new low.

I weigh food, track oils, sleep 6.5-7 hrs. Waist down 0.5 inch in that same stretch though.

Is this a true plateau or just water/glycogen masking fat loss? What data would you look at next?

Waist down 0.5 inch while scale flat is not a plateau in my book. I’d hold calories and compare weekly averages another two weeks.

Same thing happened to me around 20 lbs down. Scale froze 23 days, then dropped 3.8 lbs over four mornings.

That whoosh thing happened to me too, but don’t ignore tracking drift. I found 200 cal/day in cooking oils and bites.

The tape measure is the real MVP here.

I track similar stats and the thing that helped was 7-day rolling averages. When I stalled at ~195 for three weeks, my average was still dropping 0.15 lb/week, which felt like nothing but wasn’t zero.

I added 1,500 steps/day instead of cutting calories, and the average moved again after 10 days. Data-wise I’d want sleep, steps, waist, and training before another deficit cut.

Sleep 6.5-7 would wreck my appetite. Any chance weekend calories are sneaking in? Not accusing, just common.

Rolling averages guy is onto it. Also sodium and carbs can hide 3-4 lbs. Did you change training volume recently?

I disagree that it’s just water if it’s 19 days. That’s long enough to check whether your TDEE dropped with the weight loss.

TDEE drops, but not by 400. Likely NEAT and tracking drift.

What’s your liftin gdoing? If strength is up and waist down, you might be recomping. My scale was flat 5 weeks while squat went 185x5 to 205x5.

I’d vote diet break/refeed over another cut.

Not medical advice, just my experience after a 6-week stall: ate at maintenance for 10 days, protein high, steps same. Scale jumped 2.4 lbs first three days, then settled. Back in a deficit, I broke the plateau in 8 days. The mental break mattered as much as the physiology. Track weekly averages, not daily.

Before a dite break, check boring stuff: new meds, stress, alcohol, Friday pub fries. My plateau was two beers and fries weekly.

Waist down half an inch while scale flat screams water/glycogen masking fat loss. I’d trust the tape over 19 days.

I’d stop looking at daily lows and compare 7-day averages; mine stayed flat for 16 days, then dropped 2.2 lbs over four mornings. Also check if your lifting volume jumped recently because inflammation can hold water.

If the weekly average is truly flat for three weeks at the same intake and steps, that’s when I’d change one variable, like 150 calories or 1,000 extra daily steps.

Sleep at 6.5–7 would be my first suspect; adding 45 minutes got me a whoosh after 10 days.

Try the same jeans every two weeks; when lifting, fit changes before the scale does.

I stalled 24 days at almost the same spot—196-ish, 5-10, lifting 3x—and what cracked it was auditing my weekends, not my weekdays.

Two restaurant meals plus 3 beers were adding ~1,200-1,500 calories I wasn't logging as carefully, and the sodium had me holding 2-3 lbs. Waist kept dropping, which told me it was mostly water. Give it 4-6 weeks before calling it a true plateau.

Waist down 0.5 inch in 19 days is your tell—the scale is just being dramatic.

One thing I'd check: your old deficit gets smaller every 5 lbs. At 214 you might've been burning ~2,600; at 197 it's maybe 2,450, so 1,900 went from a 700-calorie deficit to ~450. That's still a loss, just slower and easier to hide with water.

Re-run your maintenance estimate with current weight and see if the weekly math still predicts fat loss.
