Old snack urge came back and my weekly average held

daily weigher here, and I keep a boring spreadsheet for my weekly average. Thursday was rough: after a late shift I ate a sleeve of crackers with peanut butter at the counter, then a few handfuls of cereal.

The old binge-y pull was loud, and I felt embarrassed. Next morning the scale was up 1.8 lb.

I logged it, ate my normal breakfast, took a 25-minute walk, and didn’t try to make up for it. By Sunday, my weekly average had barely moved.

What helped was treating it as one data point, not a personality verdict. The noise is allowed to happen; the average is what I watch.

For anyone who has had an old urge pop back up, what do you do the next day to keep it from snowballing?

Yep, been there. The 1.8 is almost always water/glycogen from the cracker-cereal combo, not 1.8 of fat—no math works that fast.

What helped me on late shifts was making the counter snack a planned thing: a cheese stick, clementine, and a measured handful of cereal in a small bowl. Still eating, but no sleeve. There was a thread last spring about Thursday spikes; someone called it “the Friday ghost” and it usually faded by Sunday.

One question: was the pull more about the late shift itself or skipping a real dinner? For me those are different fixes.

Either way, logging it and going back to normal breakfast is the whole game.

Fellow spreadsheet nerd. That 1.8 is almost certainly carb/sodium/glycogen water — a sleeve of crackers + cereal is basically a hydration experiment.

What saved me on late shifts was pre-portioning a “coming home” plate before I left: 1 cup cottage cheese or Greek yogurt + frozen berries, or 2 hard-boiled eggs + fruit. Sounds boring, but it beats grazing at the counter because the decision is already made.

Since you lift 4x, I’d also look at next-day gym performance and waist tape, not just scale. Question: was that night after a lower-protein, higher-cardio day?

Those are the ones where my old pull gets loud.

late shift is my snack gremlin too. one thing that helped: i stopped buying the family sleeve and got single-serve cracker packs, plus i keep a soda-swap drink ready in the fridge for the drive home.

sounds dumb but having to open 4 tiny packs kills the autopilot. also i eat at the table now, not the counter, even at 1am.

did your weekly avg hold because the other days were lower, or did it basically just flatten? that’s the part i nerd out on in my spreadsheet.
