Three small weekly goals beat one giant promise to myself

Every Sunday before close I write three things on the back of a receipt and tape it inside the till drawer. No app, no streaks, just three. Last week's list: taste the soup with a spoon and stop there, serve my own dinner in the small blue bowl, and text my sister about something that isn't food.

I'm about fourteen weeks in and the big goals never survived past Tuesday. The small ones mostly do. Some weeks I only get one, and I've stopped grading the week like a report card.

The tasting one is the tough one. Standing behind the steam table, everything is warm and right there and the little spoons are free. Writing it down somewhere I touch money all day somehow turns it into a decision instead of a reflex. Two out of three this week, which felt like a win.

Curious what everyone else puts on a weekly list — habit stuff, food stuff, or a mix of both?

I love the receipt-in-the-till thing—it’s physical in a way apps aren’t. The version that stuck for me in maintenance was making one goal a “stop,” one a “start,” and one a connection goal.

Example: stop at one handful of nuts, start with a full glass of water before lunch, text a friend. Keeps me from quietly turning the list into a diet to-do list.

Do you pick all three on Sunday, or leave one slot open for whatever the week throws at you?

Fourteen weeks is about where the novelty wears off, so I like that your list is behavioral rather than a big number. In maintenance I do a Sunday version: one “protect” goal (walk after lunch), one “prep” goal (cut veg for two lunches), one “connection” goal (call my dad).

The small blue bowl is smart—portion cues beat willpower. Do you build next week’s three from last week’s misses, or from how you want the week to feel?

I found picking from misses made it feel like homework; picking from feel kept it kind.

Night shift brain here. Three is right. I keep mine on a sticky note by the kettle.

One is always a “stop” goal: portion the snack into a cup, put the bag away before I sit down. One is a “start” goal so small it’s stupid: fill my water bottle before the commute. Third is non-food.

Rollover rule: miss one, it goes on next week’s list. Miss the same one twice, I shrink it.

Does your receipt list roll over or reset clean every Sunday?

I’m a bit the opposite: three equal goals would let me cherry-pick the easy one and call the week a win. I do better with one anchor I don’t negotiate—four lifts and protein at breakfast—plus two “nice to have” tweaks, like pausing before a second serving and setting a lights-out alarm.

Recomp is slow enough that I need that hierarchy; otherwise I’ll coast on the softest goal. Do you rank your three, or are they all equal on the receipt?

Curious whether the till placement makes the anchor stick more than app tracking ever did for me.
