Scale Stuck 3 Weeks but Waist Still Shrinking—What Am I Missing?

Down 22 lb in 16 weeks, 208 to 186.

For the last 3 weeks the scale has sat at 184–186 despite logging 1,850–1,900 kcal, 120g protein, lifting 3x/week, and walking 8k steps. Sleep tanked to 5.5 hours with a new job.

Recent fasting glucose was 96, down from 102 last year. Waist is down another 1.5 inches during this stall.

Is this a real plateau or just water/glycogen noise? What would you track next besides daily weight?

Waist down with a flat scale is a good sign.

Sleep is the first thing I’d fix. When I went from 8 to 6 hours, my weekly averages froze even in a deficit.

Did your lifting volume go up with the new job? More stress and DOMS can hold water and mask fat loss.

Same here — flat for 24 days, then 3.2 lb down overnight after a deload week. Wild.

Use a 10-day rolling average, not daily weigh-ins.

What does your hunger look like? If it’s climbing, your deficit may be smaller than the app says.

Fasting glucose 96 vs 102 is a nice trend. I’d add waist and progress photos before cutting more calories.

Photos are underrated. My scale stalled for a month but side-by-side pics showed clear change.

Could be cortisol/water from poor sleep. Are you weighing at the same time after the bathroom?

I’d track your weekly average weight and waist at the navel, plus sleep and hunger. If two of those are moving the right way, I would not change anything for another two weeks.

A true plateau is more like four to six weeks with no measurement moving. The sleep drop is a big confounder, so I’d protect that first.

Also, 120g protein at 184 lb is decent, but if you’re lifting hard, I’d keep it there rather than dropping food. What does your workout log say about reps or loads?

If strength is stable or rising, that points away from a real stall.

Strength holding is a big clue. I’d hold calories and not chase the scale for another two weeks.

Honestly the 7-day average is the only number I trust now—daily weights had me spiraling over a 2 lb swing.

Start logging your waist at the same spot every Sunday morning before food, plus one thigh or upper arm, because 1.5 inches down while 184–186 hlds is a recomp signature, not a stall. What does your 14-day weight trend look like if you graph it?

Run your weekends through the same log and I bet Thursday–Sunday tells a different story—dining out sodium can hold 3–5 lb of water even at 1,850 kcal.

I started weighing myself Friday and Monday and the gap explained my whole 'stall.' Try a higher-carb day with the same protein and see if the whoosh hits 48 hours later. Are your logged weekends actually logged, or eyeballed?

Five and a half hours is the plot twist here. When my sleep dropped to 6 for two weeks, my scale froze and my hands got puffy—same calories, same steps.

Under-sleeping pumps up cortisol and water retention, and waist can still shrink underneath that. I'd fix sleep before cutting anything else. Can you shift your bedtime 30 minutes earlier for a week and see if the scale moves?

Your waist is the louder signal, period.

My scale sat at 173 for 19 days while I went down a belt notch, and I'd bet your 3x lifting is adding glycogen and some muscle while fat keeps dropping. Pull out a pair of jeans that were tight in January and try them on.

If they fit better, I wouldn't change a single thing. What's your lifting progression looking like?

I'd start tracking something that isn't weight at all: your weekly average and your top set. My last real stll was 6 weeks at 179 with the same 3x lifting, scale flat, while my top squat went from 135x5 to 175x5 and my waist went 36.5 to 34.5.

Then it dropped 4 lb over five days at the end of week 7 for no reason I could name. Concrete stuff to add: weigh every morning and only look at the 7-day average, tape waist/hips/upper arm every two weeks, and write down load x reps for one lift.

If that top set is climbing while the average sits flat, you're not stalled, you're rebuilding. Also, if 3x a week is new-ish, the muscles can hold a couple pounds of water for a while before the number catches up.

How accurate is the 1,850 though? I found about 380 cal a day I wasn't logging: oil in the pan, cream in the coffee, three bites of my kid's mac and cheese. Started weighing the oil and the stall broke in 11 days. Not saying you're fooling yourself, just that 'I logged it' and 'I weighed it' are different sports.

Honest take: 3 weeks isn't a plateau, it's a Tuesday. I had four flat stretches of 2-4 weeks across 40+ lb and the only ones worth changing anything for were the ones past 6 weeks. You're averaging about 1.4 lb a week, which is a good clip. If week 8 comes and you're still at 184-186, then start tinkering.

Before you cut more or add cardio, try eating at roughly mainenance for 10 days. Sounds backwards, I know. I sat at 191 for five weeks, dropped calories, felt awful, stayed stuck.

Ate around 2,400 instead of 1,900 for 10 days and the scale jumped 2 lb in three days, then peeled off 4 lb over the next ten. The waist never budged during the up part, which was the tell.

If you try it, don't panic at the +2, keep protein where it is, weigh same time daily, and don't 'make up' the extra the following week. Worst case you lose 10 days and feel like a human again.
