I portioned snacks for my trip

This week I had a 40-piece lemon bar order cooling on the counter while I packed for a ten-day trip to see my sister in Portugal. The bars smelled ridiculous, and I ate one broken corner standing up, then boxed the rest and set the box by the back door so it wasn’t in my eyeline.

For the trip I made 14 little snack bags — half a cup of almonds, two dried apricots, one square of dark chocolate — because I know I get weird about portions when I’m out of my kitchen. It felt a bit fussy, but also kind of calming.

The part I’m proud of is that I didn’t “test” the bars twice. What do you pack or prep when you know food will be constant?

The back-door box move is smart—out-of-sight beats willpower for me too. One concrete thing I do: weigh the almonds instead of using a half-cup measure, because half a cup can swing a lot depending on whole vs. chopped, and that’s an easy 100-calorie spread across 14 bags.

I also Sharpie protein/calories on each bag while packing so I don’t have to think in airports. What else is going in the bags besides almonds—are you aiming for a protein/fiber pairing?

In the trials, that combo tends to help satiety more than carb-only snacks, though it’s not magic. Also, those lemon bars freeze well if you want them out of the counter danger zone.
