late-night queue snacks vs four months of changes

tbh i'm the 1am ranked guy. for years my setup was one controller, one headset, and a 2L soda i'd refill without thinking. four months on reta and the weird part isn't hunger, it's that the soda just sits there now.

i started doing dumb swap experiments: fizzy water with lime, iced tea i make too strong, those little flavor packets. current score: 6/10 for the tea, 8/10 for lime water, 0/10 for the grape packet. down 21 lbs since starting, but the bigger tell is i've gone from 4-5 sodas a night to maybe one can on weekends.

no gym hero stuff, just walking during queue times and trying to eat actual protein before i log on. anyone else notice their late-night ritual changed before the scale did?

I track weekly averages, and the surprising column for me was late-night drink volume, not just hunger. Pre-pouring one small glass and leaving the bottle in the kitchen broke the automatic refill loop.

Sparkling water over crushed ice with lime now feels like a treat, while my too-strong iced tea works better diluted. How are you scoring your swaps—is fizzy lime ahead, or have the flavor packets quietly taken the lead?

the queue is the trigger for me, not actual hunger. I started keeping a 1L insulated bottle on my desk with ice, water, a splash of cranberry juice, and a lemon squeeze.

Tart + cold hits the same “reward” button soda did. I also moved my soda cans to the garage fridge so 1am me has to put on shoes.

Current dumb score: cranberry fizz 5, soda 2, one 2am zero-sugar sports drink I don’t want to talk about. I track it in a notes app mainly to see if it’s boredom or thirst. What’s your score so far?

And does the lime version actually stick after week two?

Fellow 1am ranked person here. The swap that actually stuck for me was keeping a big insulated tumbler of cold

1am ranked guy here too. I lift 4x and I’m trying to recomp, so I quit trying to white-knuckle the queue snack and made it a protein slot: 0% Greek yogurt + SF pudding mix + frozen berries, eaten during load screens.

Keeps my hands busy and actually adds ~20g protein. Strong hibiscus tea in a 1L bottle is my backup.

Score: yogurt 8/10, fizzy lime 6/10, flavor packets 3/10—they just make me want real soda. What’s your current score, and does fizzy water kill the carbonation craving or just the sweet one?

I’m the same flavor of gremlin. I regained after my first run, so I’m wary of swaps that just move the ritual.

What helped was changing the container, not the drink: I moved from a 2L to a tiny 6oz glass and made myself refill it at the kitchen sink. At 1am I’ll drink maybe two glasses and then the friction wins.

Also started a notes app tally: “queue + drink + vibe” and realized 80% of my soda nights were after losing streaks, not actual thirst. Do you track what happens right before you reach for it, or just the swap itself?

Fellow 1am-er. The swap that helped my plateau wasn't a drink at all—it was a hard “kitchen closed” cue.

I brush my teeth right before I sit down to queue. Sounds stupid, but minty mouth + controller in hand killed the snack autopilot.

I also started logging sleep alongside food, and the weeks I actually got 7 hours the scale moved; 5-hour ranked nights it didn't. Have you tracked your sleep vs the plateau?

That was the missing variable for me, way more than fizzy water.
