Does the food math ever stop running in the background?

Two kids, dinner is a moving target, and I keep a snack drawer with the usual: applesauce pouches, cheese sticks, pretzels. The meds turned down my hunger, but I still mentally sort that drawer every night like I'm bracing for a shortage. I'm not eating much of it. I'm just... thinking about it. Checking what's left.

Planning the next grocery run. Wondering if I'll want it later. Mornings are easy.

The witching hour after bedtime is when my brain does inventory.

The scale moved 14 lbs since spring, so it's not nothing, but the head noise is the part I didn't expect to linger. For those further along: did the food chatter fade on its own, or did you have to teach yourself to stop answering it?

I do this too, just with the freezer now that it’s mostly just us. When our youngest left, I kept stocking like a snow day was coming.

What helped was moving the math to a set time: Sunday coffee, 10-minute fridge/pantry scan, one list. Then I close the kitchen. An after-dinner walk helps too—by the time I’m back, the drawer lost its pull.

The math didn’t disappear; it just got a slot instead of running all night. Curious, is it worse on nights you don’t know what’s for dinner?

That’s when my brain turns into an inventory manager.
