My plan's drug lookup flipped overnight, and I'm not celebrating yet

For what it's worth, three years here, mostly reading through the shortage and prior-auth megathreads. I loged into my insurance portal this morning and the tier for the brand-name GLP-1 my doctor and I discussed moved from 'not covered' to 'covered, prior auth required.' I didn't run around the house.

I've watched formulary pages change back before.

But I did save the PDF, screenshot the date, and leave a message for my prescriber's office. Back in 2022 I got as far as the pharmacy counter and the estimate was over $1,100, so my bar for excitement is basically underground. I'll believe it when the claim actually processes.

For the folks who've been through this: did your online coverage flip stick, or did it get reversed the second the pharmacy ran it?

vague but familiar. I keep a tiny spreadsheet for this: date checked, portal label, whether the PA link actually loads, pharmacy quoted cash price, and any “estimated” note.

Last time mine flipped from not covered to covered/PA, the portal changed a day before the claims system did — pharmacy still got a reject. So I’d screenshot it with the timestamp and ask the rep two things: is the PA effective immediately or next plan year, and does it apply to fills already sitting at the pharmacy?

Also check whether deductible/coinsurance changed even if the tier didn’t. Mine looked “covered” but the quote was still wild until the PA attached.

Before you get attached, screenshot that page with the date. Formularies flip at random. Call member services and ask for the PA criteria and effective date. Ask if the pharmacy can run a test claim.

My plan showed covered in December, then rejected in January. Night shift here too. I track every call in a notes app: dates, rep names, reference numbers. Saves hours when it flips back.

Did your portal list a quantity limit or step therapy? That’s usually the trapdoor. I’d wait until the pharmacy actually bills it successfully.

Smart to stay unexcited. One thing I'd check before you build any hope on that label: the tier change and the PA criteria are separate boxes.

On my portal there's a little "coverage details" expander under the drug name that lists quantity limits and step-therapy flags — my tier said covered for months while that expander quietly said step therapy required. Also worth asking the rep whether the change is tied to a specific effective date or just reflects today's file.

Does yours show a date on that tier line, or is it just a bare "covered"? That's the tell for whether it's real or a refresh glitch.

One column I’d add before trusting that flip: whether the portal links an actual PA criteria doc or just shows the label. My sheet tracks date, label, PA required, step therapy, quantity limit, and pharmacy stock status.

Trendline from my last five checks: the “covered” label only matched a successful fill twice; step therapy was the hidden gate the other three times. Sharp follow-up: when you click the drug name, does it open a criteria PDF or just a generic tier description?

That PDF is usually the real forecast.
