My trendline gets a monthly review, not blind faith

Kept seeing "just let it work" replies, and my inner accountant kept objecting. So I moved my log into a 14-day rolling average and started treating each month like a quarterly performance review.

What the line actually showed: daily weights wander about 1.8 lb either side of it — roughly what a salty dinner and a rough night does. Average slope over nine months is about 0.7 lb per week down, but four of the last twelve weeks were flat or up.

On any single morning that reads as failure. On the chart it's just texture.

Contrarian take: I don't think the fix is more patience. I think it's measuring the inputs — protein grams, sleep hours, step count — and letting weight be an output instead of a scoreboard. Patience without numbers is just hoping with better branding.

Anyone else split inputs from outputs, or does that turn you into a person who can't enjoy a Tuesday?

I’m a daily weigher too, and the thing that finally made my trendline useful was plotting slope in % body weight instead of pounds. When I was heavier, a 0.5 lb/week drop looked “slow”; now it’s a much bigger percentage.

I also annotate the graph with late dinners, travel, and hard workouts, so when the line blips I can see the story instead of spiraling. Sharp question: in your monthly review, are you judging the slope, the rolling average itself, or both?

I found the slope is the only part I trust for decisions; the average is just context. Otherwise I’d be doing quarterly performance reviews on a mood ring.

the 14-day roll is the move. mine kept flagging a "stall" mid-month that turned out to be scale-on-bathroom-tile vs hallway floor — like 0.6 lb of pure tile drama. fixed that and the slope looked boringly fine.

real question tho: what's your trigger for actually changing something vs just noting it in the review? i've been running "two consecutive monthly slopes under ~0.5 lb/week plus waist unchanged" but i second-guess it constantly.

also do you log soda-swap days separately? my zero-sugar days barely move the line but they kill the 2am snack spiral, and that shows up like a week later.

Night shift here. I tag each weigh-in with shift block and hours slept, then compare like with like. My review runs 28 days, not calendar month, because my rotation is 4 weeks. That stopped me blaming the line for a bad stretch. Question: do you reset the baseline after vacation, or let the old line drag?

For what it's worth, i'm with you on the monthly review. The thing that helped me was a "life tag" column next to the log: R for restaurant/takeout, T for travel, S for sick, P for PMS week.

About 90% of my little bumps trace to a Friday fish fry or a road trip, not the plan. At month-end I compare same-tag weeks instead of all weeks.

Funny side note: our pharmacy scale is always about 1.5 lb kinder than my bathroom one, so I just trust the direction. Does anyone else find that home-vs-pharmacy gap messes with their head?
