My insurer moved the prior-auth goalposts again

Three years here, mostly reading the insurance threads rather than starting them. My BCBS portal used to show PA status right on the app.

This morning it just says "review in progress" with no date, and the phone rep couldn't tell me whether my current fill counts toward the new plan year. I'm not after dosing advice or a magic appeal script.

I just want to know how folks keep their paperwork straight when the portal changes mid-cycle. I keep a one-page timeline: date submitted, rep name, reference number, and whether it was a formulary exception or a quantity limit.

It has saved me twice, including that December prior-auth mess. Anyone else keep a plain notebook just for insurance calls?

If so, what fields do you actually write down?

tbh night shifter here. I stopped trusting the portal. I screenshot PA status weekly and log fill date, pharmacy, claim number, what I paid, and which plan year it hit. When the app went vague, the real answer was in the EOB, not the PA page.

Sharp question: does your latest EOB show the claim under the old plan year or the new one? If it says old, push back—it shouldn’t count toward the new deductible.

Ask for the claims/accumulator department, not the general rep. They can actually see the bucket. Took me two calls.

Classic: the goalposts are on a subscription model now.

Brutal. I oce spent a layover on hold—airport pretzel dinner, zero answers. 😅

Ugh, I started screenshotting too—now my morning walk is me muttering

I’m a daily weigher, so I feel this: one ambiguous portal reading is noise, not a trend. What helped me when BCBS went vague was to call back and ask specifically for a PA case/reference number and the date it was last touched—then screenshot the portal with that date.

Also pull the pharmacy claim detail/receipt; mine shows which benefit year it applied to even when the app just says “review in progress.” Did your current fill actually process under the new plan year? If the claim says old year, that’s a different call.

If they won’t give a case number, ask for the call reference and the exact department that owns it.

Three-year vet too. The thing that bit me last year was that my approval ran 12 months from the processing date, not the plan year, so the January reset panic was partly a red herring.

I keep a plain note with the approval date and whatever criteria version they cited. Might be worth asking which version is active now and whether your current fill was processed under the old or new plan year.

Did they give you a case or reference number you can track outside the portal?

The thing I’d nail down: is “review in progress” tied to a new PA or just plan-year carryover? Those are separate clocks. I keep a note in my lifting log—fill date, pharmacy, what the portal said that day—so when reps contradict each other, I’ve got a timeline.

During PA limbo I also stop daily weighing; I go by waist and main lifts instead. Did your plan year flip in January or on your enrollment anniversary?

That determines whether your current fill even counts toward the new accumulator.

Does your BCBS portal show the medical PA or the pharmacy one? Mine were split—medical said “review in progress” for weeks, but the separate pharmacy-benefits login had the actual decision and a date.

The front-line rep only saw the medical side and kept saying “plan year.” What finally helped: my HR benefits person sent the pharmacy benefit summary PDF, which spelled out whether December fills roll into January.

I’m back at it after a regain, so this stuff makes me want to stress-eat, but I’m trying to channel it into annoying phone calls instead. Rooting for you.
